Rory William Docherty's Lyrical Journey at New Zealand Fashion Week 2023
A gentle and thought provoking offering of craftsmanship was brought to life by the visionary, Rory William Docherty at NFW23. As the first models glided down the runway, it was evident that this showing was an intimate portrayal of an artist’s soul, ever-so-gently whispered.
Rory's creative process unfolded like a dance — with signature sketches blossoming into three-dimensional forms, before metamorphosing into wearable art. Working with a palette of predominantly white, cream, and black, the pieces spoke for themselves in a mesmerising evolution, illustrating a depth of commitment to craft. The transition on the runway from paper to fabric was not just physical but emotional, imbibing each piece with a life force of its own.
The array of fabrics showcased was a testament to Docherty’s dedication to sustainability and luxury. Italian wool and cashmere whispered tales of timeless European ateliers, while Egyptian cotton added an air of exotic softness. Yet, it was the unique incorporation of deadstock fabrics, vintage textiles, and trims that accentuated the brand's ethos: a salute to the past, embracing the future.
Exclusive silk prints, reminiscent of Rory's original artworks, painted the runway with tales of beauty and romance. Japanese suiting added a structured balance, offering strength to the fluidity, while the outerwear was a blend of tradition and innovation. Amidst this tapestry of textiles, fully fashioned knitwear emerged as the gentle crescendo, creating a harmonious & wearble blend of warmth and style.
With every stitch and silhouette, there was an unmistakable echo of the values Rory holds dear: essentiality, optimism, restraint, and relevance. Each piece felt like an old wardrobe friend – familiar, comforting, and evocative of a more romantic time in life.
As the lights brightened and the applause resonated, a lingering feeling of nostalgia left me feeling deeply and pondering on the child inside. Rory William Docherty shared a piece of his heart and this collection was pure poetry.
