Coochiemudlo Island Dreaming
I love me a quaint destination, and Coochiemudlo Island (try saying that 10 times fast!) is just my cup of tea. It is located in the southern part of Moreton Bay & is as easy as a 10 minute ferry ride from Victoria Point to get to. Coochiemudlo boasts numerous private beaches, a resort and pub, a single café & only has 700 residents! It's absolutely stunning and also a heck of a lot of fun.
We actually caught the barge over as the timing just worked out better, the pricing for both is $5. As you approach the island, you catch beautiful glimpses of a naturally iron-rich rock cliff which is exposed at the peak. Sandy beaches wrap around the island's southern, eastern and northern sides and mangroves line the western foreshore - truly a unique natural aesthetic.
As you arrive on the shores, you realise that Coochie has much more to offer than just beaches. It is also beautifully forested on the island itself and the houses of the residents are decorated in the most gorgeous ways! Not only this, but the people themselves are warm, friendly, laidback & extremely helpful.
Note the basketball ring in the tree trunk in the above picture. I absolutely loved it!
One of the first places you come across as you walk into the residential area from the beach is the Coochiemudlo Island Resort. It is a laidback resort boasting a poolside cocktail bar, a park for the kids & a scooter hire!
Unfortunately for us, we visited on a Tuesday, one of only 2 days that the scooter hire doesn't operate (the other being Monday of course). With the limited phone reception we had, we google a few different options and found our saviour - Dave from Coochiemudlo bike hire! He & his partner Elly have a whole shed full of different bikes to rent for up to two hours which is plenty of time to explore the island. You can find them here: Dave & Elly's Bike Hire We made a call, and Dave was kind enough to come & meet us and walk us to his home where we could choose our riding equipment. As soon as we saw it we knew we needed it...
A tandem bike with a roof & baskets! How absolutely adorable is it?! This was honestly too much fun & made the whole experience a million times better. Dave was so amazing with pricing, provided us with a map of the island & was so trusting with his equipment - thank you Dave, I honestly cannot recommend you highly enough. Now that we had our beast of a bike, we ventured off to find a secluded beach for a dip & a snack!
This was our first stop, beautiful but slightly too sunny for our picnic.
This was our second stop... needless to say, this was absolutely perfect. A whole beach to ourselves - not a single other soul in view! Having done our research and knowing that there wasn't too many different food options on the island, we had packed a small picnic lunch to share. This was the ideal way to enjoy the calm serenity of the beach & the rustling water between the mangroves surrounding you. Bliss!
After our picnic we made our way back through the island, spotting many kitsch decorative pieces along the way. Such a charming little place!
There was so much diversity on this small island, this image almost reminds me of somewhere in England!
I had a fantastic time visiting Coochie, will be back again soon! xx
