Finding Your Fashion Vibe
The fashion industry (even within our own little Australian bubble) can seem scary, confusing and intimidating at the best of times. Coming up on the 3 year milestone of Modesto, I wanted to put together a few words discussing how I 'found my groove' amongst a sea of blogs, creative spaces and Instagrams.
I have always been a nature lover at heart, and so I knew I wanted the Modesto space to link back to nature in some way. When I direct, you will notice it is always within location settings, which is so true to myself. I feel this has been an important element of the success of Modesto, as much of my work is very uniform & recognisable. This works extremely well on the Insta platform in paticular.
While it is important to create quality, recognisable work, it is equally important yo be opento change.
I also started Modesto with the idea of focusing on Modest style fashion. This used to be my style preference, but as I immersed myself more heavily in the fashion world, I began moving more towards a new gothic/street vibe style. I feel that I was successfully able to bridge the two interests through my styling choices & also through the choices of modelling work which I display here. An curating eye is so important for a creative space!
I am fiercly genuine, so would never promote or put my name to a product I did not 100% believe in. This has been such an important factor for me in growing Modesto; if you have been a long time follower, you will notice alot of the collab work I do is with sustainable fashion brands. This is my current form of CSR as I geuinely believe in small batch production & vintage efforts.
It also took me a hot second to actually find my voice within fashion. When you aren't a professional critic, it is hard to go out on a limb an express your thoughts around another person's dream. As my follower count grew, I wanted to keep Modesto a positive and loving space - so chose only to write about and work with brands who I genuinely do support. While I love the efforts of Instagrammers like Diet Prada - that is simply not what this space is about.
Fashion is a constantly changing industry, and now more than ever I see those around me burning out with the pressure to exceed their peers. My advice is to be open to growing your ideas of fashion and adapting your tastes, always be kind & genuine to those around you and be patient in your growth. Hard work is so much more rewarding than overnight success.
