DJsxVAMFF16 Opening Runway Event
Key pointers from the opening event of VAMFF16 presented by David Jones: 1. Everything Denim. Seriously, double denim is simply under-doing it - think triple, even four-shade layered denim moving into F/W. Denim's versatility, movability & durability, makes the fabric a no-brainer for transeasonal dressing, and ideal for the vast array of temperatures we experience during the Australian Autumn & Winter. The all-denim trend was styled & tapped multiple times on the runway - including features by 3.1 Phillip Lim, J Brand & T by Alexander Wang. 2. Co-Ords Live On. As a co-ord (matching tops & bottoms, for anyone living beneath a rock) lover throughout the warmer months, I was so glad to see this trend replicated & seasonally modified moving into F/W16. No, the classic J-Lo 'JUICY', hot pink, velour two-piece tracksuit isn't quite back in yet *your heart breaks*. Think the same comfort levels - but muted palettes, viscoe pullovers, extra fine merino flared trackpants & loose knitting - Grandma chic cross street, and so flattering on all body types. Brands that walked co-ords included Bassike, JAC + JACK and Romance Was Born. 3. Channel The Wild West. Fringed ponchos, cowboy hats, boots, buckles and all things Western crept their way onto the runway this season, and, although not particularly my style, I adored the freshness and point of difference this styling provided. Bianca Spender, Carven and International heavyweight brand Chloe` all drew on the country style, showcasing leather embossed cowboy boots, burnt desert palettes of oranges, browns & blacks, and tasseled neck wraps, tapping the 'Cowgirl' look as an emerging trend for Autumn. 4. Dress Like A Dude. Tasteful tomboy is in and I am ecstatic about it!! Grab your Father's tweed grey jacket & pair it up with some fitted slacks? Yep. Grab your boyfriend's oversized denim shirt, and wear it over a vest & shirt? You know it. Clash those tartan & checked prints like you ain't got no eyes? Heck Yes! This contemporary styling was my choice of the evening, with huge kudos to Aussie brands Scanlan Theodore & KITX bringing the androgynous goodness. 5. Stupidly Long Sleeves. Ahhhhh, it simply wouldn't be fashion week without some wildly impractical articles of clothing or seemingly ludicrous 'who the hell would ever even buy that?' items making their debut - and this season round, the overall 'fashion-facepalm' has to be the appearance of stupidly long shirt sleeves. Guys, they aren't just a little overlength - they are so long that I was actually questioning if the designers intention was to offer the 'practicality' of being able to conceal another human being inside your sleeve. I enjoy being able to actually perform daily tasks when I wear my clothing, so, although this trend has been tapped by multiple heavyweight brands, you will not be catching your girl looking like a wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man.
Thank you to David Jones, Manning Cartel, AMPR & VAMFF for an amazing opening event.
